Effective saving – what can help you with this?

  • set a specific goal – don’t save for the future in general, instead set yourself a specific goal. It can be anything, e.g. a specialized course, a new camera, a vacation in an exotic country or a quad bike. Having a goal is always more motivating – it has a positive impact on the process of collecting funds as well as controlling expenses,
  • develop a budget (personal or household) – depending on whether you plan it for the whole family or just for yourself). It is the basis for effective management, so you must control all expenses and income. Only then will you be able to control it,
  • joint saving – joint involvement motivates saving. You can engage your family, friends or roommates to save together for a specific purpose, e.g. a joint holiday trip or a device that you will use as a group,
  • savings account – use automatic transfers, thanks to which a specific amount will be transferred to your savings account (preferably on a specific day of each month, e.g. after your salary). This means you won’t have to worry about savings,
  • give up impulsive purchases – buy something you really need and know you will use. There is no point in spending money on something that will stay on the shelf
  • “saving” campaign – arrange with your friends or siblings that each of you start saving. You can approach it as a kind of game and compete with each other to see who can save the most.
  • shared expenses – if you live with someone, share the costs equally. Similarly, in the case of sharing a car – it is worth sharing fuel costs if you use it together. This way, each of you will save,
  • remember the goal – in moments of doubt, remind yourself why you are saving. It will be something different for everyone – a dream car or other equipment, a new apartment, a long trip or repayment of debts. Stick to your goal and saving will be easier,
  • investment in financial education – if you feel that you have a lack of financial knowledge, you need to fix it. You don’t have to read any thick books on finance, you can just as well improve your skills through fun, e.g. by playing the board game Cashflow or CashPlay – an online economic and strategic game. Both games will teach you the basics of finance and investing.

Unconventional ways to save money

Many people think that saving is deadly boring. However, they do not realize that it may turn out to be an interesting adventure. There are many creative ways to save that do not require too many sacrifices.

Below is a list of ideas that may be beneficial for your wallet. They are divided into categories to make it easier to find your way around.

Saving on shopping

  • looking for opportunities to save – if you want, you can find them in almost every area. Instead of buying new books, start borrowing them from the library. However, if you want to have a certain title in your library, look for used copies in antique shops or at auctions – this way you can find great deals,
  • 1 on 1 rule – before each purchase of a new item, consider whether you can get rid of something you already have. This will help you avoid excessive accumulation of things and additionally reduce the need for shopping,
  • using rental stores – you can often find various gems there, e.g. old films, records or board games,
  • negotiations – if you feel that something costs too much, you can try to negotiate the price. This method works best at various types of fairs and smaller shops,
  • using loyalty cards – a great way to save when you regularly shop at a given store. Points collected in this way can be exchanged for prizes or benefit from additional discounts,
  • buying products by weight – in almost every case this is a cheaper option than choosing ready-made packaging. It is worth doing this especially with cold meats, cheeses, fruit and vegetables,
  • a moment of reflection – before each major purchase, give yourself some time (e.g. a few days) to think about whether you really need a given item. You’ll be surprised how often it turns out that we don’t really care about buying it. It is also a way to avoid impulsive purchases,
  • group shopping – share the costs of larger purchases with friends or neighbors, e.g. by choosing food products in wholesale packaging.

Organization

  • daily savings – every day try to put aside even the smallest amount into a piggy bank or other place where you keep such funds. This way, you won’t feel it as a typical expense, and the effects of a nice sum will appear quickly,
  • savings account – having a savings account to accumulate funds is a great way to save money. It is also much better than a deposit, because here we can deposit and withdraw funds at any time. In the event of an emergency, we will recover the funds without any problems, and without losing interest (as in the case of a deposit),
  • budget planning the other way around – stop treating saving as leftovers from expenses. Put saving first and fit your other expenses into what’s left,
  • compare prices – comparing prices is the key to saving. This applies to both the same and similar products. This way you can be sure that you found the best possible deal and spent your money wisely,
  • look for savings on small expenses – a daily coffee in the city or food delivered to your home are not big expenses, but when you add them up at the end of the month, you may be terrified. If you don’t have time to drink coffee before leaving the house, take it with you in a thermal mug,
  • cash instead of a card – at the beginning of each week, withdraw cash that you can spend. Thanks to this, you will limit excessive expenses that are often incurred when paying by card.

  • exchanging things – if you have something you don’t need, you can exchange it, e.g. with friends. Another option is to list such items on a platform for exchange between users,
  • plan your meals a week in advance – knowing what you will eat, you can prepare a shopping list. Thanks to this, you buy the products you need faster, so you save time and money. This way you can also avoid throwing away food,
  • minimalism in the wardrobe – give away or sell things you don’t wear. If you decide to leave only a few things that can be used to create different outfits, you will gain more space in your wardrobe. In addition, you will save time needed to choose an outfit,
  • food storage – use airtight containers and freezer bags to keep products fresh for longer. Thanks to this, you will also avoid wasting food,
  • recycling and upcycling – don’t immediately throw away things that are no longer needed. First, consider whether they can be used in some other way. Empty plastic packages can replace organizers, and jars can become containers for spices. Just remember not to throw away every package, but only those that will actually be useful,
  • energy efficiency – invest in energy-saving lighting and choose devices that consume less electricity. This will save you a lot of money on your bills in the long run.

  • skill exchange – do you want to learn something that one of your friends can do? You can do an exchange where one person teaches the other a skill. It could be, for example, roller skating or playing an instrument. This is a huge savings on courses, and at the same time great fun,
  • looking for free entertainment – free exhibitions, concerts and festivals are organized in every city. The so-called cinemas under the cloud. It’s worth using them if you want to have fun without having to pay admission,
  • repairing broken items – remember that many items that are damaged can be repaired. You don’t have to throw them away right away, you can try to repair them yourself or take them to a specialist. Thanks to this, you will save on purchasing a new product (unless the repair cost turns out to be higher than the new product),
  • focus on quality – sometimes it is worth investing in more expensive and more solid products (especially in the case of things that are supposed to serve us for years). We have to spend more on them, but we will save on replacements or possible repairs,
  • shared equipment – you can arrange with your friends or neighbors that each of you buy different equipment and then share them. Let’s say you have a lawn mower and your neighbor has a fancy vacuum cleaner – you use them on an exchange basis, without having to have your own.

Remember that saving money doesn’t have to mean sacrificing pleasure. These are the smart tricks that help you strike a balance between saving and enjoying life.
